Germany has nine nationwide public holidays in 2025, and smart scheduling can turn them into significantly longer breaks than your leave days alone would suggest. The concept of Brückentage — bridge days between a public holiday and a weekend — is where the real leverage lies.
The best opportunities in 2025 were centred around Easter and Ascension Day. Good Friday fell on April 18 and Easter Monday on April 21, creating a built-in long weekend. Taking Tuesday April 22 off extended the Easter break to five days using just one leave day.
Ascension Day on May 29, 2025 landed on a Thursday — the ideal bridge day scenario. Taking Friday May 30 off gave you a four-day weekend using a single leave day. Combining that with the preceding week gave ten consecutive days off for just four leave days, a 2.5x efficiency ratio.
Whit Monday on June 9 was a Monday, automatically extending the weekend. German Unity Day on October 3 fell on a Friday — pairing Thursday October 2 as a leave day created a four-day weekend. Christmas landed on Thursday December 25 and Friday December 26, with strategic leave in the week before enabling a quiet nine-to-ten day holiday period.
German employees are legally entitled to a minimum of 20 days of annual leave for a five-day working week. Most collective agreements provide 25 to 30 days. With bridge day optimisation, this budget can realistically cover 35 to 40 days of actual time off across the year.
The strongest months for bridge day opportunities in 2025 were May and October, with April and December also offering good combinations. Summer months from July through September had limited bridge day potential as no holidays fell on advantageous weekdays.
