France has eleven national public holidays in 2025, one of the most generous counts in Western Europe, and the calendar positioning makes several of them ideal for bridge day strategies. With thoughtful scheduling, those eleven holidays can translate into far longer breaks than they appear at first glance.
Spring 2025 is particularly productive. Easter Monday on April 21 delivers an automatic long weekend. Labour Day on May 1 is a Thursday — taking Friday May 2 as a single leave day gives you a four-day weekend. Victory in Europe Day on May 8 is also a Thursday in 2025 — again, one leave day on Friday May 9 produces a four-day weekend. Ascension Day on May 29 lands on a Thursday as well, and the same logic applies: one leave day on May 30 creates four consecutive days off.
If you combine the Ascension week with the surrounding holidays, taking the full week of May 26 to 30 off — which costs only four leave days, since Ascension is free — you get ten days running through to Whit Monday on June 9. This is one of the most powerful bridge day windows available in French calendar planning.
Summer provides additional opportunities. Bastille Day on July 14 is a Monday, creating an automatic three-day weekend. The Assumption on August 15 falls on a Friday — a free three-day weekend without any leave required.
French employees are entitled to five weeks of paid leave (25 working days) per year by law, with many employers offering more. Strategic bridge day planning can push the effective total to 35 or more actual days off across the year.
The strongest months for bridge days in 2025 are May, July, and November. May alone contains three public holidays, making it the priority target for leave planning.
