Italy has eleven national public holidays in 2027, and one feature makes this year stand out: Easter falls unusually early. Easter Monday (Pasquetta) lands on March 29, shifting the first major ponte opportunity of the year into late March rather than April. This rare early timing creates a spring planning window that will not recur for several years. If you plan ahead, 2027 rewards you with long breaks starting right at the tail end of winter. For a comparison with last year, see our Italy 2026 bridge day guide. Here is your complete month-by-month guide.
January: New Year's Day falls on Friday January 1, giving you an automatic three-day weekend with no leave required — a relaxed start to the year. Epiphany on January 6 is a Wednesday. Taking Monday January 4 and Tuesday January 5 as two leave days creates five consecutive days off (Saturday January 2 through Wednesday January 6) at a 2.5 to 1 ratio. This is a worthwhile ponte for anyone who wants to extend the Christmas holiday season and return to work only on Thursday January 7.
February: No national holidays. This is the ideal month to conserve leave and submit your Easter requests early. Getting your March dates approved in February, before colleagues start thinking about it, is the single most effective move you can make for your 2027 leave calendar.
March: The headline event of the entire year. Easter Monday (Pasquetta) falls on Monday March 29, automatically delivering a four-day Easter weekend. Taking just Tuesday March 30 as a single leave day extends this to five consecutive days off — a 5 to 1 ratio, the best single-day ponte of the year. For a more ambitious plan, take Tuesday March 30 and Wednesday March 31 as two leave days, then add Thursday April 1 and Friday April 2 as two more. That gives you ten consecutive days from Saturday March 27 through Sunday April 4 for just four leave days. An Easter this early is genuinely rare, and it creates an extended spring break window that most Italian calendars simply do not offer.
April: Liberation Day on April 25 falls on a Sunday in 2027. There is no automatic ponte, but many companies grant Monday April 26 as a collective closure day or allow it as leave. Taking Monday April 26 as one leave day gives you a three-day weekend. April is otherwise a quieter month for ponti in 2027 because the main Easter value has already been spent in March.
May: Labour Day on May 1 is a Saturday — no direct ponte benefit, unfortunately. May remains a strong month for voluntary leave, however. The weather is excellent across most of Italy, and travel prices are still below peak summer levels. If you have leave days to spend, consider a full week in May independent of any public holiday.
June: Republic Day on June 2 is a Wednesday. Taking Monday May 31 and Tuesday June 1 as two leave days builds five consecutive days off from Saturday May 29 through Wednesday June 2 — a 2.5 to 1 ratio. For a longer break, adding Thursday June 3 and Friday June 4 (two more leave days) gives you nine consecutive days from May 29 through June 6, using four leave days total. June is also when several Italian cities celebrate their patron saint day: Rome observes Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, Turin and Florence both celebrate San Giovanni on June 24. These local holidays are in addition to the eleven national ones and can create unexpected extra ponte windows in your city.
July: No national holidays. Many Italians begin their summer break in July. Plan ahead, especially if your company has collective August closures.
August: Ferragosto on August 15 is a Sunday. Taking Monday August 16 as one leave day gives you a three-day weekend for a single day spent. If your employer shuts down for the Ferragosto week, the cost in leave days is already built into your company schedule — check your contract or HR policy for details.
September and October: No national holidays. These are quiet months, ideal for recharging. Check whether your municipality observes a patron saint holiday during this window. In Naples, for example, San Gennaro on September 19 is a full public holiday for local workers — an opportunity that many people outside the city overlook entirely.
November: All Saints' Day on November 1 falls on a Monday in 2027 — an automatic three-day weekend with zero leave cost. This is the only free autumn ponte of the year, and it is perfect for a short getaway or a restful long weekend at home.
December: The Immaculate Conception on December 8 is a Wednesday. Taking Monday December 6 and Tuesday December 7 as two leave days creates five consecutive days off from Saturday December 4 through Wednesday December 8, for just two days spent. In Milan, December 7 is also the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, the city's patron saint, so Milanese workers get this ponte at no leave cost at all. Christmas Day on December 25 is a Saturday and St Stephen's Day on December 26 is a Sunday — no direct ponte benefit for the Christmas period, which makes 2027 less generous at the very end of the year. If you still want a winter break, taking Monday December 27 through Friday December 31 as leave (five days) connects Christmas to New Year's for a full week.
Italian law guarantees a minimum of four weeks of paid annual leave per year, equal to 20 working days on a five-day schedule. Major CCNL (Contratti Collettivi Nazionali di Lavoro) often provide between 22 and 26 days depending on sector and seniority. In 2027, the early Easter in March and the free All Saints' ponte in November are the two most valuable windows. With a targeted strategy you can reach 32 to 38 effective rest days from a standard leave budget.
