The Netherlands has nine national public holidays in 2025, including Liberation Day on May 5. With smart bridge day planning, your leave budget goes considerably further than the raw count suggests — particularly in spring, which clusters several holidays within a short window.
Easter delivers a built-in long weekend, with Good Friday on April 18 and Easter Monday on April 21. Taking Tuesday April 22 as one leave day extends this to five consecutive days for a single leave day spent.
King's Day on April 26 is a Saturday in 2025, which unfortunately offers no bridge day advantage. Liberation Day on May 5 falls on a Monday — an automatic long weekend with no leave required.
Ascension Day on May 29 is a Thursday — the ideal setup for a bridge day. Taking Friday May 30 gives you a four-day weekend for one leave day. For a more extended break, taking the full week May 26 to 30 (four working days) and combining with Whit Monday on June 9 can produce a run of nearly two weeks off for just four leave days.
Whit Monday on June 9 is a Monday — an automatic long weekend. Christmas falls on Thursday December 25 (Christmas Day) and Friday December 26 (Second Christmas Day), both public holidays. With a few leave days before or after, a long and peaceful year-end break is very achievable.
Dutch employees are entitled to a minimum of four times their weekly working hours in annual leave — typically 20 days for a 40-hour week. Many collective labour agreements (CAOs) provide 25 to 30 days. Effective bridge day planning can turn this into 35 or more actual days off. In 2025, the spring cluster around Ascension Day and Whit Monday is the standout opportunity — well worth planning several months in advance.
One practical note: bridge days around Ascension and Whit Monday are popular with many Dutch workers. Submitting your leave requests early ensures you have the best chance of securing the days you want before colleagues do.
