Italy has eleven national public holidays in 2025, one of the most generous calendars in Western Europe. The Italian tradition of the "ponte" — bridging a working day between a public holiday and a weekend — is firmly embedded in work culture, and 2025 offers several excellent opportunities to apply this approach.
April 2025 is particularly productive. Easter Monday (Pasquetta) on April 21 delivers an automatic long weekend. Liberation Day on April 25 is a Friday — an automatic three-day weekend with no leave required. Taking Thursday April 24 as one leave day extends this to four consecutive days.
Labour Day on May 1 is a Thursday. One leave day on Friday May 2 creates a four-day weekend. If you combine the Liberation Day window at the end of April with the May 1 opportunity, taking just three or four leave days across the two periods can produce a very long late-April to early-May break.
Republic Day on June 2 is a Monday — an automatic three-day weekend. Ferragosto on August 15 is a Friday — another automatic three-day weekend with no leave required.
Italian workers are legally entitled to a minimum of four weeks (20 working days) of paid annual leave per year. Many national collective labour agreements (CCNL) provide more than the legal minimum. Strategic ponte planning can push the effective total to 32 or more actual days off across the year — without exceeding your entitlement.
The strongest months for bridge day opportunities in 2025 are April, May, June, and August. The concentration of spring and early summer holidays makes this cluster the priority for annual leave planning. The April window — with both Liberation Day on a Friday and Labour Day on a Thursday — is exceptional and should be the first thing you block in your leave calendar for 2025.
Italy's ponti culture is well recognised by employers. Many companies expect requests for the major bridge days (especially 25 April and 1 May) to arrive weeks in advance, so plan ahead to secure the dates you want.
